International Women's Day - Womens’ vote came first in many co-ops

March 8, 2012

On this International Women's Day, celebrated March 8 all over the world, the International Co-operative Alliance emitted a press release reminding us that cooperative businesses gave women equal voting rights almost a century before most parliaments of the world did. This release also offers a tribute to Dorimène Desjardins, who co-founded what has become the largest cooperative financial group in Canada and sixth largest in the world along with her husband Alphonse Desjardins.

For more than 40 years now, Développement international Desjardins (DID) has been multiplying efforts to enable women to take their rightful place, as clients, employees and decision makers, in the financial institutions that it supports in developing countries.

Together, we salute the role played by women in development!
